"1984"
BOOK LAYOUT
This project was developed as part of a school assignment (Portland State University) assignment centered around reimagining the layout of a book. I chose my favorite classic novel, "1984" by George Orwell, for its powerful themes of control, surveillance, and individual resistance. The goal was to create a conceptual book layout that captures the psychological and emotional weight of the story while staying true to its dark and dystopian narrative.

Symbolism
Symbolism played a key role in shaping the visual language. I used high-contrast layout, centered composition, and basic geometric forms to represent the omnipresent gaze of authority. These minimal elements echo the psychological pressure and lack of freedom present in Orwell’s world.

Minimalist black spread with bold design, emphasizing the power and rigidity of the design.

Typography
& Feeling
I used varying font sizes, weights, and layout shifts to reflect the story’s emotional tension. These subtle disruptions mirror the chaos and collapse within the narrative while maintaining a cohesive, minimal tone.
